Increases to Bus Fares in Hertfordshire

From September 6th Intalink Connect bus fares are increasing by up to 50% with a 1 day fare in Hertford & Ware increasing from £5 to £7.50. These fares will therefore no longer be cheaper than two capped singles for a journey from Sele Farm to Hertford Bus Station, for example. This is made worse by Hertfordshire County Council’s decision to scrap Saver Cards for adults aged over 25 from the same date, removing the additional 50% discount available. For anyone with a save card, the increase is therefore from £2.50 to £5, i.e. 200%. Similar increases are being applied to weekly and monthly tickets.

Under 25 and children’s Saver Cards will still be available but the discount will be reduced to 30%.

The cheapest day ticket will now be a Rail ticket from Watton-at-Stone to Hertford North with Plus Bus which gives unlimited bus travel in Hertford and Ware for £5.20. You do not need to use the train!

From January, the government’s cap on bus tickets will reduce to £2 as announced by Andy Burnham. This will make a return journey to town on £4.

SWNA has written to Cllr. Rachel Carter to ask her to raise our concerns about these changes. They will hit our members’ pockets and will have a detrimental effect on the town as footfall will ireduce and businesses may be forced to close. It will also increase car journeys increasing congestion, CO2 emissions and air pollution.
